šŸŒ Where are you really from? This simple question can uncover complex identities! šŸ”‘ Here are some key points about my multicultural background: ā€¢ šŸ‡©šŸ‡Ŗ Born and raised in Germany with a rich German culture. ā€¢ šŸ‡»šŸ‡³ Ethnic Vietnamese roots, deeply connected to my family's traditions. ā€¢ šŸ‡§šŸ‡Ŗ Holding Belgian nationality through my motherā€™s citizenship. ā€¢ šŸŒ Fluent in Vietnamese, German, English, and Korean! (Yes, even Korean to enjoy my favorite dramas without subtitles! šŸŽ„) Navigating multiple identities isn't always straightforward, but it has enriched my life in countless ways. Iā€™ve learned that identity isnā€™t about choosing one culture over another; itā€™s about embracing the diverse influences that shape who we are. I believe many of us share similar stories of blending cultures. Whatā€™s yours? šŸ¤”

Where are you from?

For most people itā€™s a simple question with a simple answer!
Ā
Iā€™m from Korea, Iā€™m Korean!
Iā€™m from Germany, Iā€™m German!
Iā€™m from Vietnam, Iā€™m Vietnamese!
Ā
In my case, ā€œHm where should I start?ā€
Ā
I would answer ā€œIā€™m from Germanyā€
Ā
Then there is a long pauseā€¦ confusion sets into their faceā€¦ then they say
Ā
ā€œBut you donā€™t look Germanā€œ
Ā
I jokingly answer ā€œIn Germany everyone looks likeā€
Ā
ā€œSo you are Korean Ethnic, German?ā€
Ā
ā€œMy parents are from Vietnam, but now both live in Germanyā€
Ā
ā€œAh so youā€™re Vietnamese!ā€
Ā
Then I throw them a curve ball something they wouldnā€™t see coming
Ā
ā€œNo, Iā€™m actually Belgianā€
Ā
ā€œWhat?! So you were born in Belgium?ā€
Ā
ā€œNo, I was born and raised in Germanyā€
Ā
ā€œBut how come youā€™re Belgian?ā€
Ā
ā€œI took my motherā€™s nationality, when I was bornā€
Ā
ā€œSo you are mother is Belgian?ā€
Ā
ā€œSheā€™s Vietnamese, with a Belgian Citizenshipā€
Ā
ā€œWhat about your Fatherā€
Ā
ā€œHeā€™s Vietnamese, with a German Citizenshipā€
Ā
ā€œSo you speak, Vietnamese, German and English?
Ā
ā€œā€¦and Koreanā€
Ā
ā€œWhat?! Are you a genius?! Why Korean?!ā€
Ā
ā€œI just want to watch Korean Dramas, Variety Show and K-Pop without Subtitles. That brought me to Koreaā€

To summarize

I was born in Germany
I have a Belgian, German Nationality
Iā€™m Ethnic Vietnamese
I speak Vietnamese, German, English and Korean
I live in Korea

Conclusion

Growing up with Vietnamese, German, and Korean influences has shaped me into who I am today. Rather than choosing between cultures, I've learned to embrace all aspects of my identityā€”enjoying Vietnamese family traditions, appreciating German efficiency, and connecting with Korean entertainment. Like pieces of a puzzle, these different cultural elements have come together to create my unique perspective on life.
This multicultural background has given me unique perspectives and abilities, from being able to connect with people from different cultures to understanding various worldviews. It has taught me that identity isn't about choosing one culture over another, but rather about embracing the richness that comes from being part of multiple communities. Each layer of cultural experience has added depth to who I am, making me not just Vietnamese, German, or Korean, but a unique blend of all these influences.
Ā
Iā€™m probably not the only one with a similar story, whatā€™s yours?!
