Introduction
The 15-year journey to living in Korea has been a transformative experience for me, filled with ups and downs, challenges and triumphs. It all began with an encounter with K-Pop and Korean dramas, which sparked a reconnection with my Asian roots and ignited a deep longing to explore the country that had captured my heart. Through perseverance, determination, and a series of life-changing decisions, I finally realized my dream of living in Korea. This is the story of my journey, the obstacles I overcame, the connections I made, and the profound impact it has had on my life. Join me as I take you through the twists and turns of my 15-year adventure, a journey that has reaffirmed the power of dreams and the courage it takes to pursue them.
Discovering K-Pop and Korean Dramas: A Reconnection with My Asian Roots
It all started in 2008, during the early age of the Hallyu wave. I stumbled upon K-Pop and Korean Dramas, and it was like a breath of fresh air. Despite the lower production quality compared to today, these shows made me relate more to the stories, especially with the family dynamics and Confucianism displayed. As a Vietnamese growing up in Germany, watching US TV series often left me feeling somewhat disconnected from the narratives. However, Korean dramas reconnected me with my Asian roots and allowed me to feel a sense of belonging.
A Dream Deferred: University and Parental Concerns
After high school, I was determined to make my dream of visiting Korea a reality. However, my plans were put on hold when I entered University and my parents couldn't trust me to go abroad alone. They had concerns about my safety and well-being in a foreign country. Although it was disappointing, I understood their perspective and decided to focus on my studies while keeping my dream alive.
The Partnered University Opportunity: A Glimmer of Hope
During my time at University, I discovered that FH Aachen had a partnered University in Korea called Anyang University. This revelation sparked a glimmer of hope within me. Intrigued by the possibility of studying in Korea, I reached out to former exchange students for their experiences and requirements. Their positive feedback and glowing reviews fueled my determination to make this dream a reality. I delved into research, gathering information about the university, the exchange program, and the experiences of those who had gone before me.
Overcoming Challenges: Failing Exams and Doubts about the Future
Despite my excitement and determination, I faced several challenges along the way. I struggled with failing exams and experienced doubts about my future. It was a difficult time, and I knew I needed a change. I made the courageous decision to take a break from university and applied for an exchange program. This was a pivotal moment in my journey, as it led me closer to my dream of living in Korea.
Finally, Landing in Korea: The Realization of a Long-Awaited Dream
After six years of longing and virtual experiences, I finally stepped foot in the country of my dreams. It felt like becoming the main character of a Korean Drama. The semester I spent in Korea was filled with incredible moments. I had the opportunity to meet and bond with 17 other exchange students and 5 Korean students, and together, we formed a close-knit family. We shared laughter, adventures, and unforgettable experiences that will forever hold a special place in my heart.
The Traveler's Depression: Longing for Korea
Returning to Germany after my semester in Korea was tough. The stark contrast between the vibrant experiences in Korea and the unchanged familiarity of my hometown left me with a profound sense of longing. It was as if a piece of my heart remained in Korea, and I yearned to return to the place that had captured my soul. I experienced what is commonly known as the "traveler's depression," a longing for the experiences and connections forged during my time in Korea.
Committing to Living in Korea: A Life-Changing Decision
Year after year, I went back to Korea for short vacations, but it was never enough. As I approached my thirties, I knew I had to make a life-changing decision. I made up my mind to pursue a working holiday and try to live in Korea for one year. It was a daunting choice, as it meant leaving behind the familiarity and security of my life in Germany. But the pull of Korea was too strong to resist, and I knew there was no turning back.
Finding the Perfect Visa: Opening Doors to New Possibilities
In my quest to live in Korea, I stumbled upon the startup visa, and it felt like fate had intervened. This visa perfectly aligned with my goals and allowed me to live in Korea on my terms. It opened up a world of possibilities for me, enabling me to pursue my passions and continue doing the things I loved while embracing the vibrant Korean culture.
The Power of Determination: Manifesting Dreams through the Law of Attraction
Throughout my journey, I learned that if you have a goal that is strong enough and truly believe in your ability to achieve it, it's not a matter of "if" but "how." This unwavering determination led me to discover the law of attraction and the incredible power it holds in shaping our realities. By aligning my thoughts, intentions, and actions with my dream of living in Korea, I attracted the opportunities and resources needed to manifest it into reality.
